Coal India Limited (CIL), a major state-owned enterprise in India, has successfully commissioned a 100 MW solar power project in Gujarat, marking a significant step in its renewable energy initiative. The project received its commissioning certificate from the Gujarat Energy Development Agency (GEDA) effective from March 31, 2026. This move comes as part of CIL's broader strategy to ramp up its renewable energy portfolio, especially after facing criticism from the Comptroller and Auditor General of India (CAG) for delays in meeting its ambitious target of 3,000 MW of solar power capacity. As of December 2024, CIL had only managed to install 122.492 MW, amounting to just 4.08% of its target. The government has urged CIL to expedite its renewable projects to align with its goal of becoming a Net Zero energy company.
