On Thursday, the Institute of Human Behaviour and Allied Sciences (IHBAS) conducted a 'Gatekeeper Training' session aimed at enhancing mental health awareness and suicide prevention among teachers from 140 educational institutions in Delhi, including 121 government schools. The training, part of the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) SAMVEDNA programme, focused on equipping educators with the skills to identify signs of mental health distress, such as social withdrawal and academic decline. Two teachers from each school were trained to become 'master trainers,' who will subsequently educate their peers. The sessions were based on the Question, Persuade, Refer (QPR) model, which helps identify suicide warning signs and connect at-risk individuals with professional help. Dr. Rajinder K Dhamija, director of IHBAS, highlighted that the initiative aims to combat the stigma surrounding mental health, thereby improving access to mental health services for students. This training is part of IHBAS's ongoing School Mental Health Initiative, which seeks to provide mental health counselling services to children in schools.
