The Maharashtra higher education department has issued a directive to all universities and colleges in the state to implement fuel-saving measures as part of an energy conservation initiative. In a circular dated May 13, Shailendra Deolankar, the director of higher education, emphasized the need for educational institutions to adopt sustainable practices in response to rising fuel consumption and environmental concerns. The directive encourages institutions to promote car-pooling among staff and students, reduce unnecessary travel, and utilize online meetings to minimize transportation needs. Additionally, colleges and universities are urged to limit the use of electricity-consuming equipment and adopt energy conservation practices. The department aims to foster collective participation from students, faculty, and staff in contributing to environmental protection and efficient resource usage. This initiative is part of a broader effort to enhance sustainability in educational institutions while reducing operational costs related to transport and energy consumption.
