The Indian Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI) has announced a revision in the release date for the provisional annual Gross Domestic Product (GDP) estimates and fourth-quarter data. Initially set for the last working day of May, the new date is now June 7, 2026, or the previous working day if June 7 falls on a holiday. This decision was made after consultations with the Advisory Committee on National Accounts Statistics (ACNAS) to improve the quality of the data. The ministry explained that the change is necessary because critical datasets become available only after a lag of up to two months. Listed companies, for instance, are allowed up to 60 days from the end of the financial year to file their audited financial results, which often leads to submissions close to the May 31 deadline. Additionally, key fiscal data from the Central government for March, including revenue and capital expenditure, are finalized only after a two-month lag. The ministry emphasized that this revision is part of ongoing efforts to enhance the quality and robustness of national accounts data, aligning with international best practices.
