The Indian central government has expressed concern over the West Bengal government's failure to implement central welfare schemes aimed at Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Groups (PVTGs) and tribal communities. In a letter addressed to Choten Dhendup Lama, the principal secretary of the Tribal Development Department, the Ministry of Tribal Affairs noted that the state has not submitted any proposals for two flagship programs: the Pradhan Mantri Janjati Adivasi Nyaya Maha Abhiyan (PM-JANMAN) and the Dharti Aaba Janjatiya Gram Utkarsh Abhiyan (DAJGUA), launched in 2023 and 2024, respectively. The ministry pointed out that the state's progress has not met expectations, with no participation in crucial surveys for housing, road connectivity, and other essential services. Additionally, the state has yet to sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the National Education Society for Tribal Students (NESTS), which is necessary for funding the construction of Eklavya Model Residential Schools (EMRS). The Centre hopes that with a new government expected to take office soon, these issues will be resolved and the benefits of the schemes will reach the intended communities.
