Six months after the foundation stone was laid for the new ₹4,217 crore Bombay High Court complex in Bandra East, Mumbai, construction has yet to commence as the final design awaits approval. The Maharashtra government’s public works department (PWD) is currently addressing objections raised about the proposed design, which was created by architect Hafeez Contractor. The design, featuring a mix of classical and neo-classical styles, has faced criticism for its colonial appearance, with former judge Gautam Patel stating it fails to reflect Mumbai's architectural identity. The new complex is essential due to severe space constraints at the existing Fort building, which was constructed in 1878 and is now inadequate for the growing number of judges and courtrooms. The high court's sanctioned strength has increased to 94 judges, necessitating a larger and more modern facility. A decision on the design is expected after the court's summer recess.

The delayed construction of the new complex exacerbates the overcrowding issues at the current high court, affecting the judicial process and potentially leading to longer wait times for cases to be heard.
