Carlos Bras, a 41-year-old former employee of Santander Bank, has pleaded guilty to stealing over $125,000 from a 78-year-old customer suffering from dementia. Working as a relationship manager at a branch in Seekonk, Massachusetts, Bras exploited his access to sensitive customer information to impersonate the victim, referred to as 'MDR,' and illegally withdraw funds from his account. Between April and July 2023, Bras accessed the account approximately 88 times, issuing checks, conducting bank transfers, and making unauthorized purchases, including a 2023 KIA Sportage. His fraudulent activities were uncovered by Santander's internal fraud detection unit, which led to an investigation involving local police and the U.S. Secret Service. Under the plea agreement, Bras is required to forfeit $126,000 and could face up to 32 years in prison when sentenced on September 15. His attorney stated that Bras is remorseful and committed to atoning for his actions.
