The West Hartford Town Council has unanimously approved a project to install a new generator at Firehouse Station No. 1, located at 561 Prospect Avenue, funded by a grant from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). The council voted 9-0 on May 12 to accept the grant, which totals $119,402.65, comprised of $107,462.39 in federal funds and a required local match of $11,940.26. This funding will be allocated from the town's existing appropriations for the capital improvement project approved for fiscal year 2024. Town Manager Rick Ledwith highlighted that the generator will enhance the resilience of the fire station, ensuring it remains operational during emergencies and power outages. Currently, Firehouse No. 1 does not have a generator, which is a critical addition as other firehouses in the town are already equipped with one. Mayor Shari Cantor expressed appreciation for the development, noting the generator's potential necessity in future emergencies. The grant period for this project runs from April 8, 2023, to November 1, 2026, which is also the deadline for completing the installation.
