Researchers at the University of Cambridge have conducted the first human trial of a vaccine entirely designed by artificial intelligence, aimed at providing broad protection against viruses including SARS, MERS, and Covid-19. The trial, which involved nearly 40 participants from late 2021 to 2023, reported a 'modest' immune response, indicating that while the vaccine did not significantly enhance antibody levels, it was well tolerated with no serious side effects. The vaccine's design utilized a machine learning algorithm that analyzed genetic data from Sarbeco coronaviruses, marking a shift from reactive vaccine development to a more proactive approach. This universal vaccine aspires to mitigate the need for constant updates required by current vaccines, potentially safeguarding against future pandemics. The findings, published in the Journal of Infection, suggest that further research is necessary, with a phase 2 trial planned to assess the vaccine's protective efficacy more thoroughly.
