A team of astronomers led by Hossein Hatamnia from the University of California Riverside has produced the most detailed map of the cosmic web, utilizing data from NASA's James Webb Space Telescope (JWST). This groundbreaking map traces the network of galaxies and filament structures back to when the Universe was emerging from the 'Cosmic Dark Ages,' approximately 1 billion years after the Big Bang. The COSMOS-Web project, which is the largest of JWST's Cycle 1 General Observation programs, involved 152 wide-field observations totaling 255 hours of data collection using JWST's advanced Near-Infrared Camera (NIRCam) and Mid-Infrared Instrument (MIRI). The resulting map reveals intricate details of the cosmic web that were previously obscured, allowing astronomers to study galaxy evolution across cosmic time. The team has made the data publicly available, including a catalog of 164,000 galaxies, enhancing our understanding of the Universe's structure and the role of dark matter.
