'Desert Warrior,' a historical action film from Saudi Arabia, has become infamous for its catastrophic box office performance, losing 99.6% of its production budget. Announced in 2021 by MBC Studios, the film aimed to elevate Saudi Arabia's entertainment industry on the global stage. Starring Hollywood heavyweights like Anthony Mackie and Ben Kingsley, the film's production budget soared to approximately $150 million (around ₹1,400 crore). Despite a grand vision and an international crew of 400 to 500 people, the film struggled to connect with audiences. After a lengthy two-year post-production, it premiered at the Zurich Film Festival in 2025 and was released in international theaters in April 2026. However, it earned less than $500,000 in North America and only $665,000 globally, making it one of the biggest financial disasters in cinema history. Factors such as weak marketing, low audience awareness, and negative word of mouth contributed to its downfall, highlighting that star power and budget do not guarantee success in the film industry.
