Across India, the mismatch between wage growth and inflation has created disparities; for instance, while states like Delhi and Karnataka have seen moderate wage growth, labor-supplying states such as Odisha and Bihar have recorded higher increases, albeit from a low base. The rising cost of living has forced households to rely more on borrowing, with net household savings declining from 7.1% of GDP in FY15 to 5.2% in FY24. To address these issues, experts suggest a more localized approach to setting minimum wages that considers regional economic conditions and labor demand. Establishing support centers for migrant workers could also enhance compliance with wage norms and improve access to job opportunities.
