In a disturbing incident in Nashik district, Maharashtra, Maheshgiri alias Mahesh Kakde, a 31-year-old self-styled godman, was arrested for allegedly sexually exploiting a 28-year-old woman. The woman was taken to Kakde by her family in 2024, believing he could cure her of supposed black magic influences. Under the guise of his claimed divine powers, he sexually assaulted her at a lodge and threatened her with dire consequences if she spoke out. He also allegedly took objectionable photographs to blackmail her and sent her obscene messages. The victim, initially fearful, eventually reported the incident with the help of activists from the Andhashraddha Nirmoolan Samiti. An FIR has been filed, including charges under the Maharashtra anti-black magic law. This case raises significant concerns about the exploitation of vulnerable individuals by self-styled spiritual leaders, particularly as investigations continue into similar allegations against another godman in Nashik.
