The transport department in Mira Road, a suburb of Mumbai, India, has launched an investigation into allegations that approximately 30 auto-rickshaw drivers, primarily Rohingya and Bangladeshi nationals, obtained their operating permits through fraudulent means. This inquiry follows a complaint made by Mira-Bhayandar MLA Narendra Mehta in March. State Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik stated that the investigation involves verification of documents in collaboration with local police and tehsildars. If the allegations are confirmed, FIRs (First Information Reports) will be filed against the implicated individuals. In response to ongoing issues with the online driver's license system, the transport department is also considering requiring applicants to be physically present at RTO offices for testing. This change aims to address discrepancies and misuse, although it raises concerns about potential overcrowding and the resurgence of middleman activities.
