A community charity event at Medomak Valley High School in Maine took an unexpected turn when a dish of baked potting soil was mistakenly served as dessert. This incident occurred on Wednesday during the annual Empty Bowl Supper, an event aimed at supporting local charities. The potting soil had been prepared earlier in the day for a science project, where students baked it to sterilize it for testing plant growth. Unfortunately, during the rush to serve the meal, the dish was confused with actual food and brought out to the serving tables. Principal Linda Pease stated that three students briefly tasted the soil, believing it to be a dessert, before they realized the mix-up. The dish was quickly removed from the serving area, and school officials emphasized that the incident was purely accidental. Following the event, administrators reached out to the parents of the students involved and spoke with the children the next day. Pease expressed deep regret over the incident, highlighting the importance of the Empty Bowl Supper as a cherished community service event.
