During the Microsoft Build conference, Microsoft announced the Majorana 2 quantum computing chip, which could pave the way for commercially viable quantum computers by 2029. This new chip is reportedly 1,000 times more reliable than its predecessor and significantly improves qubit stability, achieving an average lifetime of 20 seconds, with some qubits lasting up to one minute. The redesign includes a shift from aluminium to lead-based superconductors, enhancing device quality and reliability. Microsoft emphasizes the role of AI in this development, utilizing an AI-powered research platform to analyze nearly two decades of quantum data, speeding up experiments that previously took weeks. The advancements in Majorana 2 position Microsoft to tackle real-world problems across various sectors, including healthcare, energy, and sustainability. Chetan Nayak, a technical fellow at Microsoft, highlighted the importance of continuous improvements to reach a computer with significant commercial and societal value.
