In Karnataka, the head of the grievance cell within the police force has issued a circular aimed at addressing caste discrimination faced by police personnel belonging to Scheduled Castes (SC) and Scheduled Tribes (ST). This directive, issued by Additional Director General of Police (ADGP) Devajyoti Ray, emphasizes the urgent need to prioritize housing for these individuals who have reported difficulties in securing rental accommodations due to caste bias. Concerns were raised during a Government Assurance Committee meeting on April 28, highlighting that many SC and ST police personnel are often denied housing, forcing them to live far from their duty stations, which can hinder their ability to report on time. The new directive requires all units to prioritize applications from these personnel, ensuring that their cases are verified and processed swiftly. Additionally, a senior police officer noted an increase in caste-related disputes in residential areas, indicating a growing divide between upper and lower caste groups. The Police Gruha scheme, as stated by Home Minister G. Parameshwara, aims to allocate police quarters more efficiently, with around 40% of staff already housed and ongoing efforts to improve living conditions.
