In response to growing protests and political pressure, Renu Vig, Vice-Chancellor of Panjab University, has assured Malvinder Singh Kang, MP for Anandpur Sahib, that Punjabi signboards will be installed on campus. This decision follows significant backlash over the university’s recent installation of new signboards that included Hindi, English, and Braille, but omitted Gurmukhi script. The protests intensified when members of the student organization SATH blackened the newly installed signboards, prompting Kang to label the exclusion as a 'painful erasure' of Punjabi identity. Kang, who has a history with the university as a former president of the Students’ Council, emphasized that the omission was not just an administrative error but a serious affront to Punjab's linguistic and cultural heritage. In her correspondence with Kang, Vig confirmed that the construction office had initiated the procurement process for the Punjabi signage plates through the Government e-Marketplace (GeM) portal, aiming for swift installation. Kang has also requested a formal policy to prevent future omissions of Gurmukhi and called for dialogue with students and alumni to foster campus harmony.
