Amazon has entered into power purchase agreements for nine renewable energy projects in New South Wales and Victoria, Australia, significantly increasing its renewable energy sourcing from 430MW to nearly 1GW. This includes one wind farm and ten solar and battery projects, with the aim of supporting its datacentre operations and achieving net zero carbon emissions by 2040. The projects also include the Golden Plains 2 wind farm, which is the largest in Australia, and a solar-battery farm in Muswellbrook, built on a former coalmine site. Matt O’Rourke, head of infrastructure and energy policy for Amazon Web Services in Australia and New Zealand, emphasized that these investments will help stabilize the electricity grid by utilizing utility-scale batteries. However, there is growing pushback against datacentre construction due to environmental concerns and resource use, as highlighted in a recent inquiry by the New South Wales parliament. Critics like Rod Sims have expressed concerns that current power purchase agreements may not contribute additional renewable energy to the grid. While Amazon promotes its renewable energy initiatives, it has not disclosed the specific electricity consumption of its datacentres, leading to calls for greater transparency in energy usage data.
