On Friday, India successfully tested the Agni-5 missile equipped with Multiple Independently Targetable Re-entry Vehicle (MIRV) technology from Dr APJ Abdul Kalam Island. This advanced missile can strike multiple targets across a vast area, demonstrating India's ability to enhance its nuclear deterrent capabilities. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh praised the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and its partners for this achievement, which strengthens India's defense posture in light of increasing security challenges from neighboring countries. The Agni-5 missile, part of the Agni series, boasts a range exceeding 5,000 kilometers, enabling it to reach significant parts of Asia, including China. The current test is the second of its kind, following an earlier trial in March 2024. The introduction of MIRV technology allows the missile to carry several warheads, each capable of targeting different locations, complicating interception efforts by adversaries. The ongoing development of the Agni missile series, including the anticipated Agni-VI, reflects India's commitment to maintaining a credible minimum deterrence strategy and adapting to evolving global security dynamics.
