Anthropic, the AI research company, recently stirred controversy among developers when it appeared to limit access to its Claude Code tool for new subscribers on the $20-per-month Pro plan. Users quickly noticed that the pricing page indicated Claude Code was not included in the Pro plan, although it remained available in the higher $100/month Max plan. Existing Pro subscribers experienced no disruption in access. Following widespread speculation and frustration, Amol Avasare, Anthropic’s head of growth, clarified on social media that this was merely a small test affecting around 2% of new prosumer sign-ups. He explained that the company is reevaluating its plans due to significant changes in user engagement and usage patterns since the launch of the Max plan a year ago. Despite the confusion, the pricing page was updated to confirm that Claude Code is indeed part of the Pro plan, alleviating concerns among users.
