The recent increase in petrol and diesel prices has significantly impacted Pune's wholesale markets, leading to a surge in vegetable and fruit prices. Traders at Shri Chhatrapati Shivaji Market Yard have reported price hikes of 10 to 15 percent in just one day, attributing this to rising transportation costs. Senior trader Yuvraj Kanchi noted that the increased diesel prices have forced traders to pass on costs to consumers, affecting essential commodities like tomatoes, green chillies, and leafy vegetables. Transport unions across Maharashtra have announced revised freight charges, citing the unsustainability of current rates without adjustments due to rising operational costs. Baba Shinde, president of the Maharashtra Drivers-Owners and Representatives Federation, emphasized that diesel constitutes a significant portion of transport expenses, and the latest fuel hike necessitates phased increases in freight charges. Consumers are already feeling the pinch, with homemaker Priya Deshmukh expressing concerns about managing household expenses as prices for groceries and transport fares rise. Experts warn that these trends may contribute to inflationary pressure in urban and semi-urban areas, further straining household budgets.
