The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has achieved a significant political victory by unseating Mamata Banerjee, the three-time chief minister of West Bengal, in the latest elections. Suvendu Adhikari of the BJP defeated Banerjee by securing 73,917 votes, which is 15,105 votes more than the 58,812 votes received by the Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader. This defeat is particularly consequential as it marks the first time the BJP will form a government in West Bengal, a state where Banerjee has been a dominant political figure since 2011. Previously, in 2021, Adhikari had narrowly defeated Banerjee in Nandigram, but this time the stakes were higher as the BJP secured a total of 207 seats. In a parallel development, Arvind Kejriwal, the chief of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), also lost his seat in Delhi, where BJP's Parvesh Sahib Singh Verma received 30,088 votes against Kejriwal's 25,999 votes. This marks a significant decline for AAP, which previously held a majority in the Delhi assembly. With these victories, the BJP is signaling its intent to expand its influence in Indian politics, with Punjab being the next target.
