Nargis, born Fatima Rashid in 1929 in Rawalpindi, was a prominent Bollywood actress who became a symbol of a new independent India in the 1950s. She was deeply intertwined with Raj Kapoor, who built his career around her, yet their relationship remained unfulfilled as he never left his wife. After a life-changing incident on the set of 'Mother India', where she was rescued by her co-star Sunil Dutt, they fell in love and married in 1958. Nargis chose family over stardom, raising three children and engaging in social causes, including becoming the first patron of the Spastics Society of India.
