The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) in India has approved the establishment of a ship repair facility in Vadinar, Gujarat, with an investment of ₹1,570 crore. This facility, to be developed by the Deendayal Port Authority (DPA) and Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL), will feature a 650-metre jetty, two floating dry docks, and essential marine infrastructure. The CCEA highlighted that this facility will address a significant gap in India's ship repair capabilities, particularly for large vessels exceeding 230 meters in length. Currently, India lacks sufficient domestic capacity for such repairs, leading to reliance on foreign shipyards. The Vadinar location is advantageous due to its deep draft and proximity to major shipping routes and ports like Mundra and Kandla. The project is expected to bolster maritime ancillary services and support local micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs). Furthermore, it aligns with India's maritime objectives under the Maritime India Vision 2030 and Maritime Amrit Kaal Vision 2047, aiming to enhance the competitiveness of Indian ports and reduce foreign exchange outflows.
