Nayaka community leaders are expressing concern over the lack of action from the Union Government regarding the enhancement of reservation quotas for Scheduled Tribes (STs) under the 9th schedule of the Indian Constitution. They highlight that the current quota stands at 7.5%, which aligns with the principle of proportional representation. Despite the Karnataka government's previous appeals for increased quotas being ignored, community leaders are urging for swift action similar to measures taken in Tamil Nadu. They also advocate for horizontal reservation, which would create sub-quotas within categories such as Scheduled Castes (SC), STs, Other Backward Classes (OBC), and women. However, they stress that any new initiatives must involve consultations with all states and stakeholders to prevent injustice to underrepresented communities. The ongoing court cases related to these issues have led to a reluctance among leaders to publicly protest.
