A fraudulent scheme has emerged in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, India, where unidentified individuals have been illegally collecting fees for door-to-door waste collection and issuing counterfeit receipts lacking valid transaction IDs. The Lucknow Swachhata Abhiyan (LSA), the private agency managing waste collection in collaboration with the Lucknow Municipal Corporation (LMC), confirmed these irregularities following citizen complaints. An internal investigation revealed significant gaps in monitoring the payment collection process. In response, the LSA has initiated a detailed investigation and legal action against those involved, with plans to file First Information Reports (FIRs) based on preliminary findings. LSA regional director Abhay Ranjan emphasized the importance of public vigilance and advised residents to prefer online payments and verify transaction IDs on receipts. The agency has urged citizens to report any suspicious activity, particularly slips without transaction IDs, as fraudulent.
