The Punjab and Haryana High Court has taken a strong stance against the Chandigarh administration for permitting a liquor vend to operate in an unsafe building located in Sector 17. The court, led by Chief Justice Sheel Nagu and Justice Sanjiv Berry, has directed the chief secretary to provide an affidavit explaining the lack of action regarding a show-cause notice issued on August 7, 2025. This notice highlighted the unauthorized use of the building, which had been declared unsafe for human habitation and was ordered for demolition. Senior advocate Anand Chhibbar, representing the petitioner Rajbir Singh Rai, emphasized the grave public safety risks posed by the vend, which accommodates 200 to 300 patrons at a time. The court expressed shock at the issuance of a retail liquor license for 2026, despite the ongoing safety concerns, and scheduled a hearing for April 30 to further address the issue. The case underscores the need for strict adherence to safety regulations to protect public health and welfare.
