Mysuru district in Karnataka, India, is experiencing a critical shortage of physical education (PE) teachers, with 79 vacancies reported across 2,091 state-run schools. These positions have remained unfilled for almost two decades, leading to a decline in the quality of physical education and a lack of structured sports activities for students. Parents have voiced concerns that children are missing opportunities to participate in outdoor games such as volleyball and kho kho, as well as to compete in athletic events at various levels. Currently, only 358 out of 435 sanctioned PE teacher posts are filled, resulting in increased pressure on the existing staff. The Deputy Director of School Education, Udaykumar, acknowledged the challenges posed by the recruitment backlog, while JH Ravi, president of the State Govt Schools Grade I Physical Education Teachers Association, emphasized the need for timely recruitment to improve the situation. The decline in physical activity is further exacerbated by excessive screen time among students, impacting their health and concentration.
