The Lok Sabha-constituted inquiry committee, led by Supreme Court Justice Aravind Kumar, has concluded its investigation into allegations against Justice Yashwant Varma of the Allahabad High Court. This decision follows Justice Varma's resignation on April 9, which effectively halted the impeachment process initiated under the Judges (Inquiry) Act, 1968. The committee, which included Bombay High Court Chief Justice Shrikrishna Chandrashekhar and senior advocate BV Acharya, had conducted multiple hearings and examined key witnesses before Justice Varma stepped down. His resignation came just as he was set to defend himself against the allegations of unaccounted cash discovered at his official residence after a fire incident in March 2025. The committee's report, which will be forwarded to the Lok Sabha, marks the end of the parliamentary inquiry, although it does not preclude potential criminal investigations against Justice Varma, as the requirement for prior sanction for prosecution no longer applies.
