With the rise in pet ownership in Ludhiana, experts from Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (GADVASU) have raised concerns about health risks associated with pet-borne diseases. Gurpreet Singh Preet, an assistant professor at the university, highlighted the dangers posed by the toxocara parasite found in cats, which can lead to severe complications, including abortion in pregnant women. This trend is not limited to cats, as many are also adopting birds and small animals, though dogs remain the most popular pets. Preet noted that many owners prefer long-haired breeds, which are often ill-suited for the local climate, suggesting that short-haired breeds are a better fit. He also pointed out the risk of parvovirus in dogs, particularly affecting puppies, emphasizing the importance of vaccination. As summer approaches, there is an anticipated increase in fungal and skin infections among pets, particularly in exotic breeds that may not adapt well to the heat. Simple measures, such as providing cold water, can help prevent overheating in pets during extreme temperatures.
