The Employees Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) has introduced significant changes to the management of Provident Fund (PF) trusts, including capping interest rates at 2% above the annual rate set by the EPFO. This measure is aimed at enhancing compliance and oversight, particularly for companies with their own exempt PF trusts, which previously offered interest rates as high as 34%. The new regulations also replace mandatory audits with a risk-based audit system, focusing on establishments deemed high-risk or non-compliant. Companies can voluntarily relinquish their PF trust exemptions, and courts may also cancel these exemptions under certain conditions. In such cases, companies must issue public notices to ensure employees' interests are protected and that all provident fund balances are accurately managed.
