Vijay, the chief of the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), is on the verge of becoming Tamil Nadu's next Chief Minister, pending proof of a majority in the state assembly. He currently has the backing of 112 MLAs, which includes five from the Indian National Congress, but he needs 117 votes to secure a majority in the 234-member assembly. The Communist Party of India has criticized the Governor's insistence on Vijay proving his majority before taking office, asserting that the lack of a clear mandate in the recent elections does not negate TVK's position as the largest party in the assembly.
