On Wednesday, the Union government of India approved a ₹9,585-crore scheme aimed at replacing around 200,000 older BS-IV heavy vehicles, including 191,000 trucks and 16,329 buses, in the National Capital Region (NCR) with cleaner alternatives that meet BS-VI emission standards or run on CNG or battery power. This initiative is part of efforts to combat severe air pollution in the region, where New Delhi has been ranked the world's most polluted capital for eight consecutive years. Vehicle owners participating in the scheme will benefit from a 5% interest subvention on loans for five years, monthly fuel vouchers of up to ₹4,800, and an 8% discount on the ex-showroom price of new vehicles.
