In Trichy, the state highways department is accelerating the construction of a new bridge over the Cauvery River near Srirangam due to low water levels in the Mettur dam. Currently, the dam's water level is at 79.7 feet, significantly lower than last year's 112.7 feet, which has resulted in only 45% of its capacity being utilized. As a result, the department has implemented round-the-clock work, aiming to complete 80% of the bridge project by the end of June 2023, with a commissioning target set for September. To date, all substructure work is complete, including the installation of 15 piers, and girders have been placed on 10 of the planned 16 spans. The ongoing low flow of around 350-400 cusecs in the Cauvery has allowed construction to proceed without major interruptions, although the opening of the Mettur dam for irrigation may be delayed without significant rainfall in the catchment areas. Despite a slight slowdown due to migrant workers returning home during elections, officials remain optimistic about the project's timeline.
