The civil hospital in Ludhiana, Punjab, India, has been functioning without a forensic expert for almost one year, forcing medical staff to depend on external institutions like Dayanand Medical College and Hospital (DMC) and Christian Medical College and Hospital (CMC) for assistance in complicated medico-legal cases. This situation has raised concerns regarding delays in critical investigations and patient care, particularly in cases involving unnatural deaths, assaults, and poisonings where precise examination is essential. Senior medical officer Dr. Akhil Sareen highlighted the challenges posed by the vacant position, stating that general practitioners lack the necessary training for specialized forensic evaluations. Healthcare workers emphasized that while informal arrangements with nearby medical colleges provide some support, they are not a substitute for an in-house expert. The absence of a forensic specialist complicates emergency scenarios, where timely input can significantly influence treatment and legal outcomes. Doctors are urging the Punjab government to take immediate action to recruit forensic specialists to address these operational gaps effectively.
