In a remarkable discovery, researchers from Ireland have identified what is believed to be the oldest surviving copy of 'Caedmon's Hymn,' the earliest known English poem, in a medieval manuscript located in Rome. This significant find was made during a study of manuscripts at the National Public Library of Rome. The poem, originally composed in the 7th century by Caedmon, a Northumbrian agricultural worker, was found in a 9th-century manuscript of 'Ecclesiastical History of the English People' written by the Venerable Bede. Elisabetta Magnanti, a visiting research fellow at Trinity College Dublin, expressed her astonishment at the discovery, noting that the manuscript had previously gone unexamined due to its complex history. The manuscript has traveled through various locations, including the Vatican, before being cataloged in the library. This finding not only highlights the importance of early English literature but also demonstrates that English writing was gaining prominence much earlier than previously thought.
