On June 5, 2023, the West Bengal government dissolved the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) after Mayor Firhad Hakim resigned. IAS officer Smita Pandey has been appointed as the administrator of KMC until fresh elections are scheduled later this year. The dissolution order was issued by the municipal affairs department, stating that all councillors and committee members would vacate their offices as per the Kolkata Municipal Corporation Act of 1980. Hakim, who also served as the state’s urban development minister, indicated he could no longer fulfill his responsibilities effectively. His resignation followed a series of similar resignations by other municipal leaders in the state, including Bidhannagar Mayor Krishna Chakraborty and Chandannagore Mayor Ram Chakraborty. The KMC has been under the control of the Trinamool Congress since 2010, marking a significant political shift in West Bengal after the end of 34 years of Left rule.
