Colonel Himanshu Bali has been remanded to Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) custody until May 25, following his arrest in connection with an alleged bribery case involving ₹50 lakh (approximately $60,000 USD) from a defense supplier based in Kanpur, India. The Rouse Avenue Court granted the CBI's request for custodial interrogation after hearing their submissions. Colonel Bali, who was stationed with the Army Ordnance Corps (AOC) at the Eastern Command in Fort William, Kolkata, is accused of engaging in corrupt practices related to military procurement. The CBI alleges that he manipulated tender awards, cleared inflated or pending bills, and approved substandard material samples, which compromised the integrity of the procurement process. The investigation, initiated under Section 61(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023, along with provisions of the Prevention of Corruption Act, highlights a broader issue of corruption within the defense sector. Officials have identified M/s Eastern Global Limited as the primary beneficiary of these corrupt activities.
