In Uttar Pradesh, a new initiative aims to tackle the shortage of teachers in 2,635 government-run secondary schools by engaging retired educators as volunteer teachers. The proposal, submitted by Mahendra Dev, the state's secondary education director, was discussed in a meeting on April 20 chaired by the additional chief secretary to Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath. Following this, a directive was issued on May 4 to district inspectors of schools (DIoSs) to compile lists of retired teachers and staff based on their expertise. Interested retired personnel can apply via email to the DIoS for teaching assignments, with a maximum age limit of 65 years. This initiative comes as the Uttar Pradesh Public Service Commission (UPPSC) is still in the process of recruiting for 7,466 LT Grade posts and 1,471 lecturer posts, which has delayed the hiring of new teachers. To ensure quality education during this period, an integrated teaching model combining offline and online classes will be implemented, along with access to video lectures from expert teachers for students in remote areas.
