Eileen Wang, the former mayor of Arcadia in Los Angeles County, California, has pleaded guilty to acting as an illegal foreign agent for the People's Republic of China (PRC). In a plea deal unsealed on Monday, Wang admitted to running a fake news website called 'U.S. News Center' with her ex-fiancé, Yaoning 'Mike' Sun, from 2020 to 2022. The site purported to serve Chinese Americans but was actually used to disseminate propaganda directed by the Chinese government. Wang complied with orders from her PRC handlers, posting articles that included false narratives about issues like human rights in Xinjiang. She faces a maximum of 10 years in prison for her actions. This case underscores the ongoing efforts by China to exert influence in the United States, with officials expressing concern over the implications of such espionage activities. Sun, who also managed Wang's campaign, has already been sentenced to four years in federal prison for similar charges.
