Lewis Moody, the former England rugby player, is set to embark on a 500-mile charity cycling challenge to raise funds for motor neurone disease (MND) research, following his own diagnosis. The event will take place over seven days, beginning on June 14 at the Newcastle Red Bulls rugby club and concluding at Twickenham on June 20, coinciding with the Gallagher Premiership Rugby Final. Moody will be joined by Kathy and Hamish Weir, the widow and son of Scottish rugby legend Doddie Weir, who passed away from MND in November 2022. Moody expressed that the ride is not just about fundraising but also about showing solidarity with the MND community, emphasizing the importance of support and awareness. MND is a rare, progressive neurological condition that gradually impairs muscle function. The challenge aims to honor Doddie's legacy and inspire others affected by the disease. Paul Thompson from the My Name'5 Doddie Foundation praised Moody for his courage and leadership in this initiative, which seeks to accelerate research towards effective treatments for MND.
