A tragic bus accident in Udhampur district, Jammu and Kashmir, claimed the lives of 21 individuals and injured 29 others when a passenger bus lost control while navigating a turn near Kagort village. The bus, which was carrying 50 passengers, plunged approximately 100 meters down a slope, crushing an auto-rickshaw upon landing. The incident occurred around 10 am and was exacerbated by the bus's inability to negotiate a blind curve. Rescue operations were promptly initiated by an Army convoy passing by, along with local police and district administration. Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed condolences and announced ₹2 lakh (approximately $2,400 USD) in ex-gratia relief for the families of the deceased and ₹50,000 (approximately $600 USD) for the injured. Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah also announced similar compensation measures. The investigation into the accident's cause is underway as the community mourns this devastating loss.
