A Sri Lankan court has ordered the resumption of excavation work at a mass grave site in Chemmani, located on the outskirts of Jaffna in the Northern Province. The excavation, which had been paused for seven months due to funding issues, will now proceed with an allocation of LKR 2.1 million (approximately $6,000 USD) from the Ministry of Justice. The court has permitted diplomatic representatives from the European Union, France, Germany, Italy, and Romania to observe the excavation process. Previously, during an initial phase of the excavation, 240 skeletal remains were uncovered along with personal items such as feeding bottles, toys, and children's shoes. This site became significant during the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) conflict in the 1990s, with initial discoveries of skeletal remains reported in 1998. The excavation aims to uncover more remains and provide closure to families affected by the conflict.
