On Tuesday, a Delhi court sentenced two Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) officers, Ramneesh (joint director) and VK Pandey (inspector), to three months' imprisonment for conducting an illegal search and arrest at the residence of Indian Revenue Service (IRS) officer Ashok Kumar Aggarwal 26 years ago. The court, presided over by judicial magistrate Shashank Nandan Bhatt, ruled that public servants must not misuse their authority for personal grievances, stating that such actions undermine public trust in the law. The officers were convicted under provisions related to house trespass and assault, having forcibly entered Aggarwal's residence in Paschim Vihar, Delhi, on October 19, 2000, during which they allegedly assaulted the gatekeeper and confined Aggarwal's family. The court highlighted the significance of accountability for public officials, noting that their actions had serious societal implications. Although their sentences were suspended for one month to allow for an appeal, they were also ordered to pay ₹50,000 (approximately $600 USD) to Aggarwal for the hardships endured during a lengthy legal battle.
