The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is set to strengthen its position in the Rajya Sabha, India's upper house of Parliament, as seven members from the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) have announced their merger with the ruling party. This decision, communicated to Rajya Sabha Chairman C.P. Radhakrishnan, allows the BJP's current count of 106 members to rise to 113, while the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) tally would increase from 141 to 148. The merger is permissible under the anti-defection law, which stipulates that two-thirds of a party's members must agree to merge to avoid disqualification. AAP's former deputy leader in the Rajya Sabha, Raghav Chadha, confirmed that the seven MPs signed a letter formalizing their decision. In response, AAP leader Sanjay Singh indicated plans to request the disqualification of the merging members, asserting that their actions violate party loyalty. The situation echoes a similar merger in 2019 when several members of the Telugu Desam Party joined the BJP without facing disqualification. The AAP currently holds 22 MLAs in Delhi and 92 in Punjab, where it governs, alongside smaller representations in Gujarat, Jammu and Kashmir, and Goa.
