Prada, the Italian luxury fashion house, is launching a limited-edition collection of sandals inspired by Kolhapuri chappals, a traditional Indian footwear style. This initiative comes almost a year after the brand faced allegations of cultural appropriation related to its spring/summer 2026 menswear collection. The sandals will be produced by skilled artisans from Maharashtra and Karnataka, ensuring authentic craftsmanship. To further support local artisans, Prada has announced a comprehensive training program aimed at enhancing design and technical skills. This program, which will be fully funded by Prada, is set to reach 180 artisans over three years, with structured training modules. Applications for the first cohort will open in May, offering young artisans aged 18-45 the chance to gain skills that meet market demands. Selected participants will also have the opportunity to train at the Prada Group Academy in Italy, fostering growth and preserving traditional craftsmanship. Lorenzo Bertelli, head of corporate social responsibility at Prada, emphasized the importance of education in sustaining craftsmanship and supporting local communities.
