In southeastern Georgia, two wildfires have wreaked havoc, destroying more than 120 homes and threatening lives as they continue to burn. The Highway 82 fire, which ignited after a foil balloon contacted live power lines, has been particularly devastating, destroying at least 87 homes and marking the most destructive wildfire in Georgia's history according to Governor Brian Kemp. As of Saturday, the fire's perimeter spans over 14.8 square miles (38.3 square km) but is only about 10% contained. Officials warn that strong winds could significantly spread the flames, urging residents to evacuate if necessary. A second wildfire, located approximately 70 miles (113 km) southwest, has burned over 46.9 square miles (121.5 square km) and destroyed at least 35 homes, also remaining about 10% contained. Firefighters are battling more than 150 other wildfires across Georgia and Florida, contributing to air quality concerns in distant areas. The current wildfire situation is exacerbated by extreme drought, climate change, and remnants of Hurricane Helene, which left dead trees in some forests.
