Rivian is preparing to launch its much-anticipated R2 electric SUV, which will be priced at $45,000 and aims to compete with models like the BMW iX3. CEO RJ Scaringe revealed plans for additional R2 variants, including a potential R2X, emphasizing the company's commitment to expanding its electric vehicle offerings. The initial R2 models are being manufactured at Rivian's facility in Normal, Illinois, which has a production capacity of 155,000 vehicles annually, alongside the R1 series and delivery vans. Looking ahead, Rivian is set to establish a new factory in Georgia, expected to commence operations in 2028 with a capacity of 300,000 vehicles per year, partly funded by a $4.5 billion loan from the Department of Energy. This facility will also produce robotaxis for Uber as part of a $1.25 billion agreement. Rivian's strategic expansion reflects its ambition to offer a diverse range of electric vehicles and potentially develop its own lidar technology in partnership with a Chinese company.
