Computer scientist Alexander Hanff has raised alarms over Google Chrome's automatic download of a 4GB file named 'weights.bin', which is necessary for the operation of Gemini Nano, Google's on-device large language model (LLM). Hanff's findings indicate that Chrome does not prompt users for consent before downloading this file, which can be found in a hidden directory on macOS systems. Users have reported that even after deleting the file, Chrome re-downloads it unless specific AI features are disabled or Chrome is uninstalled. This behavior has sparked concerns regarding user privacy and potential violations of European privacy laws, including the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). Furthermore, Hanff estimates that if this file is deployed across 500 million devices, it could generate approximately 30,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions, equivalent to the annual emissions of 6,500 cars. Google has yet to respond to inquiries about this issue.
